Journey like Nipernaadi
Landscape quiz, a simple and fun team game
Toomas Nipernaadi is an unknown traveller. He always tells tall tales and makes empty promises – especially to beautiful women. In the words of Nipernaadi himself, “a beautiful lie costs more than the harsh truth”.
Journey like Nipernaadi is a new Estonian-themed cross-country quiz for teams. In this game, you take on the role of Nipernaadi, and the surrounding countryside represents Estonia’s landscape that you can roam freely. At each stop, you have to use Nipernaadi’s “resources” to deduce what the people in different places need. This is not the time for fibbing. The right answer will earn you praise.
In this game, teams compete against each other, and if you manage to trick and mislead your rivals with playful fibbing, you reduce their praise score. You can keep an eye on the movement of the other teams throughout the game and reduce their scores with clever zigzagging.
You can choose a leisurely pace to complete the journey and enjoy the quirky questions and beautiful nature. However, given that someone has to win and you intend to do just that, it pays to be resourceful and plan your time and itinerary to be at your busiest at noon. “Noon” arrives exactly in the middle of the game, marking a time when all praise will be doubled for a limited time. Planning ahead and a fast-paced interim sprit add to the excitement and surprise, which are fun to discuss as a group at the end of the game.
There is no need to spend the night in the woods or by the river like Nipernaadi – the game lasts approx. two hours. When the sun goes down, it is time to quit roaming and return to normal life. Player will cover 2–6 km at a leisurely pace.
The game is played in teams of 3–5 members, who have to wander around Estonia with Nipernaadi’s “resources” in hand and solve the tasks.
The team’s goal is to visit as many places in Estonia as possible and earn praise. There is someone in every settlement who will praise you for helping them. Nipernaadi’s “resources” are fit for the 21st century, consisting of a tablet in a weatherproof bag that runs the whole game: navigating, asking questions, setting tasks, and keeping track of praise. The questions are all related to Estonia, from the period of Nipernaadi to the present day.
